Metropolitan Lithotripter Associates offers an innovative cancer treatment called cryosurgery (or cryoablation). Rather than removing the prostate through surgery or using strong drugs or radiation to treat the cancer, cryosurgery uses extremely cold temperatures to destroy (ablate) the cancer cells. Doctors can perform the procedure on an outpatient basis, typically with minimal pain and a quick recovery.
Many patients who are too weak or ill to undergo a prostatectomy (prostate removal) or to receive radiation can still consider cryosurgery. If the cancer has not spread outside the prostate, cryoablation could be appropriate treatment for any patient.
A Second Chance After Radiation
Prostate cancer treated with radiation can sometimes come back. Cryosurgery can be used to destroy these cancer cells as well. This treatment is called salvage cryoablation.
